Here are a few steps you can take which may stop your MacBook from freezing/misbehaving:

  1. Repair disk permissions:

    • From “Finder”, Go to “Utilities” and run the “Disk Utility” app. Another way to get to the same place is click the magnifying glass in the top right corner and type “Disk Utility”.

    • Run “First Aid”

  2. The System Memory Controller (SMC) takes care of all sorts of things behind the scenes in your Mac, from battery management to keyboard backlighting. If your MacBook keeps freezing, it could be that the SMC needs to be reset:

    • If you’re using a 2017 MacBook (has USB-A ports, mag-safe power connector) shut it down, then press Shift+Ctrl+Opt and the power button at the same time. Hold all these keys for 10 seconds, then let go. Now press the power button to switch on your MacBook

    • If you’re using a 2018 MacBook or later (only has 2 USB-C ports) the process is different. Shutdown the MacBook and then press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Let go and wait a few seconds, then press it again to turn on the MacBook.

  3. Make sure the MacBook has the latest version of MacOS installed. Be aware an upgrade requires both an internet connection and power adapter. It can take an hour to complete.

    • Go to the apple icon in the top left corner and click on it.

    • Click on “About this Mac” and then “Software update”
